“Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.”
CAIN AND ABEL – Genesis 4:1-16
Remember last time we heard the story when God drove Adam and Eve out of the garden and now they were going to have to work very hard for their food and clothes. How sad, if they had only obeyed God they would still be living in the beautiful Garden of Eden. Even sadder is that because they disobeyed, everyone that would ever live would have sin in their hearts also.
Even though God loves us very much, when we do not obey Him we get in trouble. Did you know that sin brings trouble? Yes it brings lots of trouble, especially when we do not obey mom and dad, our teacher or anyone in authority, we get in trouble and that is because we are committing a sin of some kind. It might be lying, cheating, fighting, stealing, disobeying, having bad thoughts or not being nice because we want it our way.
Because Adam and Eve had disobeyed God, they now had sin in their hearts. When they had children, they were just like their parents, and they had sin in their hearts also. Adam and Eve had lots of children and their children had children and that is how they populated the earth. Because Adam and Eve disobeyed God now everyone in the world is born with sin in his heart.
Even though they worked hard, Adam and Eve were very happy when they had their first baby, who they named Cain. A little while later they had another baby boy that they named Abel.
When Cain grew up he became a farmer, he liked to plant fruits and vegetables. And Abel liked animals so he became a shepherd and took care of sheep.
One day Cain and Abel brought a gift to God to thank Him for all the good things that He had done for them. So they built an altar for the sacrifice, that is how they did things a long time ago. A sacrifice is when you give your very best to God. It is something that you might have wanted to keep for yourself.
Cain brought a lot of fruits, vegetables and grains and put it on the altar, and Abel brought a brand new baby lamb to give to God.
God had set some rules about sacrifices and He liked the one Abel offered better since he was obeying what God had told them to do. That made Cain very mad.
God loved both brothers but He said to Cain: “Why are you angry and pouting?” “If you do what is right you will be happy, but be careful if you have bad thoughts in your head, they are going to bring you trouble.” God also told him: “You need to learn to listen and obey.” But Cain did not listen and he was mad at God and at his brother also.
From that day on Cain was jealous of his brother and did not like him anymore. How sad, because Abel had done nothing at all to him.
Cain was so mad that he was thinking about doing some terrible things to his brother. So one day he said: “Abel come with me to the field.” “OK” Able replied and went to the field with Cain. Well when they were far away where no one could see them, Cain attacked his brother and killed him.
Later that day God saw Cain working in the field in the hot sun and He asked him: “Where is your brother Abel?” Cain was nasty to God and said: “How should I know, am I supposed to take care of my brother? But God knew the terrible thing Cain had done.
God said to him, “I see your brother’s blood on the ground. Because you killed him, the ground is no longer going to produce fruits and vegetables. From now one you are going to have to go far away to find food.”
Cain was afraid and he told God: “Lord, your punishment is too hard and my relatives will try to kill me when they find out what I have done. I will always be running from everyone.”
So God put a mark on him. When anyone saw the mark they knew not to kill him because God was watching.
That was a very sad day for everyone. Cain had to leave his home because of the evil thing he had done. Adam and Eve lost both their sons in just one day, Abel was dead and Cain lost his family. The worst thing of all is that Cain went away from the Lord’s presence and lived in the land of Nod.
How sad; it would have been so different if Cain had only listened and obeyed God.
We need to remember that God loves us and we should obey Him always, not because we are afraid of Him, but because we love Him.
